The rock and coral-like shapes of natural burl wood caps inspired me to sculpt some sea creatures to inhabit them.  Sea turtles and octopi seem especially at home on them.

Notice the intricate canework on the  backs of the turtles and frogs

Sculpture available for purchase on-line or at fine art fairs in Oregon and Washington.
Two Green Sea Turtles
10 x 9 x 10"
$330
These turtles are a study in texture:  From their rough-layered scales to their smooth shells, they play with all the possibilities.  Each of  the sections of their shell is made of four or more wedges of kaleidoscopic cane. Australian burl wood base.
Blue-Ringed Octopus
7 x 8 x 3"
$300
The blue-ringed octopus has a body shaped more like a squid than other octopi.  This one is feeling his way over the rocky bottom in search of food.  Turn him over to expose his canework suction cups.
Two Red Sea Turtles
6.5 x 8 x 7.75"
$300
A fancifully-colored pair of sea turtles.  Gold, white, and red kaleidoscopic canes makes up their shells.  Australian burl wood base.
Green-Finned Mermaid
6 x 4 x 4"
$75
Like the one in Hans Christian Anderson's story, this little mermaid is rather sad.  She has feather-cane flippers and seaweed hair.
